Governments "legally" dump megatons of trash in the ocean, then charge two kids with felonies for dumping a few bags. The kids need a "spanking," the government(s) should be ashamed.
EDIT: To be clear, I think giving those kids a mask, snorkel, and fins, and about 300 - 400 hours each of community service to pick up their trash would be sufficient. The governments that have dumped trash should clean theirs up too, but I expect that would require full scuba gear. 🤿🏊🚢
Love this idea. Striking how the green alarmists are dedicated to keeping America’s streets littered with garbage generated by the entitled and human waste emitted by the homeless. Just like their love of EV evaporated once Elon became a Trump supporter. They are hypocrites. Bring back the Indian shedding a tear for the despoiled environment.
Littering is a symptom of our internal trash. Every other word uttered or written is offensive, or should be. It is obvious that we are not offended any more. Little children everywhere spew painfully obscene language to each other, to their parents, and to strangers. A long, long time ago I had to eat soap for letting a 'bad' word slip out. But now if someone doesn't speak a constant stream of filth he is ostracized or worse.
Apparently, people don't even notice when others urinate in public. The most private body parts and intimate acts are on display nearly everywhere. Acts and language are a public display of what goes on in our hearts. There is a good reason that such filth was formerly a known identifier of insanity. Environmental cleanup is rather pointless if we're not willing to clean up our insides.
I will add graffiti to that list as well. I hate it. Went to Berlin in 2010 and then came back and went to Seattle (this was before) and the difference between the 2 was just jaw dropping. Berlin is covered in graffiti, which the inhabitants tell themselves is "ART" instead of vandalism. Seattle was beautiful then, the true Emerald City. Not any more.
Good grief, you certainly pushed my buttons two articles in two days. I place blame on the start of all this filth on environmental groups for all of the disposable plastic items to save the environment starting with plastic grocery bags. Guess organic bags led to the loss of all the giant redwoods. I would charge deposits on any disposable items ANY including filthy diapers thrown into parking lots and under an on picnic tables. The desecration is a reflection of the state of our character and soul.
“The change is designed to reduce beach and roadside litter, save landfill space, increase recycling efforts and help recycling facilities from having to shut down when plastic bags get stuck in the machinery.
Each Delawarean uses about 434 plastic bags a year, and that means nearly 2,400 tons of plastic bags from Delaware end up in landfills annually.
By decreasing the number of plastic carryout bags the public uses, a large portion of this plastic waste can be mitigated. This directly helps our environment by reducing the amount of unsightly plastic bags on our roads and waterways that can harm us and our wildlife.
I’ve watched cars in transit or at a stop light (many with the “illegal” tinted windows and/or fake temp tags that don’t get pulled over!!) just toss out their trash from their cars. It’s crazy – too many people just don’t seem to care anymore.
Not littering was a constant message in my Gen-X childhood. I have seen little or no messaging about that in the years since...and effects are all around us.
Thank you for this! The litter is an outward sign of a societal or a personal lack of self government or self control or a moral compass about what is right and what is wrong.
As I take my walks or go to the dump (no garbage man) I pick up the trash I see along the roads. It starts with me. It might just be one plastic water bottle, but it all adds up to a community that says "We care and we are watching."
I remember driving in the summer of 2020 in my small Idaho town and saw a low-rider shrimp burner with NY plates. So, at the stop sign (I was in front of him) I stop and get out to make chit chat and see who he was. Seemed like a nice mexican looking fella with tats and stuff. (I too, am quite a bit mexican). He was married to the daughter of a local guy and they were looking to settle down here. I asked what he thought of it and he answered with something I will never forget. He said "It is so clean." Yes, it is clean and I guard my community with prayer and trash pickup. Needless to say, they moved on before the fall was over. The lack of trash or a shit ton of trash is all you need to see to actually view the heart of a community. And...you cross a state border and voila! Trash!

Yes, that is so true, esp. from China, India, et. al. - they need full scuba gear! 😊
I’d add a fine for those kids too - at least a fine for their parents who should make their kids feel the burn of paying it themselves.

Excellent point and metaphor. We are squandering our American Inheritance in so many ways. Thanks, Jesse!

Yes, completely agree! Thanks for adding that.

Good thoughts and I agree – our disposable society has been detrimental for us.
Delaware initiated a plastic bag ban in 2019 and updated it in 2021 and little good it has done: https://legis.delaware.gov/SessionLaws/Chapter?id=41276

Paper bags, which are more sustainable, can be recycled by placing them in your curbside recycling cart at home.” https://dnrec.delaware.gov/waste-hazardous/recycling/plastic-bags/
